Women’s History Month: Honoring the Life and Legacy of Henrietta Lacks, March 14, 2016

This past Women’s History Month, Komen collaborated with Rep. Elijah Cummings to honor Henrietta Lacks’ contribution to the world, via research involving her “HeLa cells,” which led to the discovery of and advances in precision medicine, lifesaving cancer treatments and cures. Komen hosted a Congressional Reception recognizing Rep. Cummings’ leadership in introducing the first U.S. Congressional Resolution honoring Ms. Lacks, with special guests the Lacks Family, who shared a rare look at their collection of photos, honors and documents. Nearly 150 guests joined in celebration, including Reps. Elijah Cummings, Sheila Jackson Lee, Eddie Bernice Johnson, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and National Institutes of Health’s Dr. Kathy Hudson.
